2013 could hardly start better for George Bennett after obtaining the silver medal at the New Zealand Road Championships behind teammate Hayden Roulston. Bennett is one of the youngest riders in the peloton and is different from other New Zealand WorldTour riders as he did not come to road cycling through a track program. The young climber started mountain biking to gain a bit of fitness for his rugby activities. In 2008 he represented New Zealand in the mountain bike World Championships and stayed in Europe where he raced two years for an amateur road team.
Bennett performs strong in the mountains and was the best young rider in the Tour de l’Isard, a Pyrenees stage race. His move to Team Trek LIVESTRONG, where he won the Tour of Wellington in 2011, brought him to the attention of Team RadioShack, where he got the opportunity to finish the year as a stagiaire. In this role he was impressive and instrumental in the overall victories for the team in the Tour of Utah and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.
When Bennett is not riding his bike, he likes to play rugby or go fishing and hunting. And he really hates the winter cold.
